Solution 2: Use Perian Plugin to Play MPG with QuickTime
Perian is one of the most popularly used free QucikTime components to provide native support to a wide variety of file formats such as MPG. However the biggest limitation of using Perian is that it can be only used on Mac OS Snow Leopard. Moreover the latest version of Perian, 1.2.3 requires installation of QuickTime 7 which is not available for other Mac OS apart from Snow Leopard such as Mountain Lion. >> Best Perian Alternative for Mac.
What you need to know before downloading Perian:
1. The latest version 1.2.3 of Perian doesn't work on Mac OS X Mavericks, let alone Yosemite and Mac 10.11 EI Capitan because Perian requires installation of quicktime 7, which doesn't exist for Mavericks and above. It also doesn't work on Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
2. With a Mac running Mac OS X 10.7, say, Lion, you have to downgrade to the previous version, say 1.2.2. The version of 1.2.3 of Perian does not support QuickTime 10 in Lion and fails to fix the loss of audio after one second in xvid files with ac3.
3. Before installing Perian, you need to remove all QuickTime Components installed on your Mac, like FFusion, Xvid Delegate, 3ivX, DivX, DivX Decoder, XviD, msmpeg4v1, msmpeg4v2, AviImporter, EX_M4S2, Casio AVI Importer, AC3 Codec, and MatroskaQT.
4. For a Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion, converting MPG video to QuickTime is highly recommended.
Solution 3: Free MPG Player for Mac – VLC
Apart from using the video converter and Perian you can also use a universal media player such as VLC player to play various types of file formats such as MPG on Mac. The VLC player works seamlessly on Mac and can be used to convert MPG format files into a format of your choice. However for seamless functioning you must ensure that you download Front Row which will allow you to import the MPG files into the VLC player for conversion. But you will not be able to transfer the converted files into other Apple products for playback.
Now, just pick up the way as you like for playing MPG files on Quicktime Player or Mac OS X El Capitan. Enjoy!

I too am a huge fan of VLC. I still kick myself for not realising sooner that the whole 'changing region codes back and forth' thing could be bypassed by simply using VLC to watch DVDs instead of Apple's DVD Player.
I've also noticed that Apple's DVD Player seems to have it's own little quirks when reading DVDs. Discs which are brand new and in pristine condition cause a read error (which quits the app, bizarrely) with Apple's DVD Player, and yet the same disc works fine in other players (such as VLC, or indeed, my hardware DVD player).
Anyway - a big thumbs up for VLC!
Mplayer has also enabled me to view some AVIs that I would have otherwise had trouble with. I have even written an alias that uses the Developer Tools' 'setfile' command-line tool to set the type and creator of a file to MPlayer, so that I can quickly make a downloaded AVI file automatically open up in the future in Mplayer.
The simple fact is that one player won't do it all. Such is life in the Mac mpeg/divx/avi/etc world (probably the PC world too). I found this especially true for divx encoded avi files, though it has been a few months since I've messed around with digital dowloads.

I haven't found anything mplayer couldn't handle until now. It even plays the movie trailers from Apple, which are encoded with Sorensen video/QDesign sound. Mind, I'm using the latest CVS version with the latest ffmpeg library, so there might be movies an older version of mplayer can't play.
MPlayer handles Windows Media files, which surprised me the first time I tried it, and is quite nice. But it doesn't handle RealPlayer files at all, or at least not any I've tried to play with it. Anyone else manage to get a .rm into MPlayer? (Note: this was a local file, not a stream from a website)
I meant to try Mplayer a while back; this has reminded me, and it seems very nice. I usually use VLC, having recently reinstalled OSX and not wishing to install a pile of Quicktime codecs (I don't like the fact that the official DivX codex only comes in installer from, for example). Both VLC and Mplayer are single .app packages with drag-drop install, which I like. They both allow fullscreen, which is big advantage over basic QuickTime. Mplayer seems to me to have a nicer (and more standard) interface, and it offers a useful Statistics window showing CPU usage and the like. In short, there's a good chance Mplayer will become my default player. VLC probably has a lot of plus points - maybe the streaming server side, though I haven't played with that - but for everyday playback, I'm impressed with Mplayer. Very impressed.
Anyone have any luck with DVDs in this OSX version of Mplayer? The site doesn't seem to give any information on them, and the official Mplayer docs give a command-line solution that's no use with the OSX app. VLC offers a 'play disc' menu option that works fine. You can drag .vob files into Mplayer, but they don't seem to play (though I'm no DVD file expert). Has anyone got DVDs playing through this version of Mplayer?
On a related topic, did anyone find a way of stopping DVD PLayer from running when a disc is inserted? I can stop it playing, but it still runs and puts a region change message up where applicable (and closing it ejects the disc). Ideally, I'd like to make VLC/Mplayer the default DVD application and bypass Apple's DVD Player altogether..
Can't you just change the setting in the 'CDs & DVDs' control panel (assuming you are using 10.2)? This should allow you to change the default DVD player from Apple's to whatever you like..

Hi all,
Does anyone here know whether Mplayer can play Windows Media Player 9 files? Mejores aplicaciones para mac 2017.
Yes, I know. No it cannot. No software for Mac OS can currently play Windows Media 9 audio/video.
Try getting a copy of 'ffmpeg codec' at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10830 that will let you play Windows Media in Quicktime. Between that, the offical DiVX 5 codec and a copy of VLC, you shouldn't need anything else.

Quicktime still doesn't recognize mpeg2. Only VLC & Mplayer will play my file. I need to use Quicktime to edit it!
